Product Description

Sikkens Cetol HLSe is a premium, oil-based, deep-penetrating, low-build translucent timber stain for exterior use. Designed as an essential basecoat for all Cetol topcoats (e.g. Cetol Filter 7 Plus) on all types of bare timber. Alternatively, it is an ideal 1-pot 3-layer system for broad timber surfaces such as decks, cladding and screening. Sikkens Cetol HLSe has superior penetration and adhesion to the surface of the timber and provides long term protection and durability when used before Cetol topcoats.

Application Description

Ready to use with no need to thin. Stir thoroughly before use. Final colour will depend upon timber type, previous treatment and the number of coats applied. Ensure timber moisture content is below 15%. Do not apply in temperatures below 5℃ and above 35°C, in damp conditions (when relative humidity is above 85%), or if rain or dew is likely before the product has dried. If using more than one can, it is advisable to mix them together in a larger container or finish in a corner before starting the new can to ensure colour consistency. On previously stained timber, touch up bare areas first and allow to dry. Avoid heavy wear and tear on the decking for a few days after application. At temperatures below 10°C and when used internally with limited air circulation, the drying process will be delayed. On correctly prepared surfaces, three coats evenly with a good quality brush along the grain, avoiding overlaps. Allow 24 hours between coats.

Tips & Advice

  • 1. Preparing the Surfaces
    Application conditions
Temperature between 5 – 35°C. Relative humidity max. 85%. At temperatures below 10°C, the drying process will be delayed. Drying time may also be retarded when used internally with insufficient air flow / ventilation or in conditions of high humidity. If such conditions are prevalent, please wait for a dryer day to complete your project.
    Application methods
Ready for use after thorough stirring. Apply liberally in the direction of the grain using a good quality brush for optimum penetration. DO NOT use rollers or applicators
    Preparation and application advice:
Step 1: Ensure the timber to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dirt or loose debris. New Timber: New tannin-rich timbers should be allowed to season first or rough sanded and treated with Sikkens Cetol BL Tannin & Oil Remover to encourage oils and tannins to be drawn to the surface. Older Timber: Sand back to bare all flaking, peeling, and weathered coating. If the existing stain finish is in good condition or the timber has uniformly weathered (turned grey) with no visible finish, then sanding is not essential; move to the next step.
Step 2: Cean the timber with Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner. Rinse and allow to dry thoroughly. For previously stained timber with an intact finish, for best results, light sanding is recommended. Remove sanding dust.
Step 3: Apply Sikkens Cetol HLSe
Stir the can well before and frequently during use. Brush on evenly along the grain. Apply a second coat after 24 hours. A third coat is recommended for extra protection in areas with full sun exposure and around pools. Do not allow puddles to form. Back brush the excess for a uniform finish.
  • 2. Cleaning
Remove as much stain as possible from equipment before cleaning with white spirit. Do not use or store in extremes of temperature.
  • 3. Storing
Store in accordance with local regulations. Store in a segregated and approved area. Store in original container protected from direct sunlight in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials (see Section 10) and food and drink. Eliminate all ignition sources. Separate from oxidising materials. Keep container tightly closed and sealed until ready for use. Containers that have been opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Do not store in unlabelled containers. Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination. See Section 10 for incompatible materials before handling or use.
