Tips & Advice
-
1. Preparing the SurfacesMoisture content of timber to be coated should not exceed 15%
New or unseasoned hardwood such as Merbau (Kwila), Spotted Gum, Tallowwood, Jarrah and Ironbark contain natural tannins. These tannins need to be extracted prior to coating. This will happen naturally over a period of 3-6 months depending on exposure, or the process can be accelerated using Sikkens Cetol Tannin & Oil Remover followed by Sikkens Cetol Deck & Wood Cleaner.
Preparation and application advice:
Step 1: Ensure the timber to be treated is clean, dry and free from any dirt or loose debris. New Timber: New tannin-rich timbers should be allowed to season first or rough sanded and treated with Sikkens Cetol BL Tannin & Oil Remover to encourage oils and tannins to be drawn to the surface. Older Timber: Sand back to bare all flaking, peeling, and weathered coating. If the existing stain finish is in good condition or the timber has uniformly weathered (turned grey) with no visible finish, then sanding is not essential; move to the next step.
Step 2: Cean the timber with Sikkens Cetol BL Deck & Wood Cleaner. Rinse and allow to dry thoroughly. For previously stained timber with an intact finish, for best results, light sanding is recommended. Remove sanding dust.
Step 3: Apply Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro
Stir the can well before and frequently during use. Brush on evenly along the grain. Apply a second coat after 2 hours. A third coat is recommended for extra protection in areas with full sun exposure and around pools. Do not allow puddles to form. Back brush the excess for a uniform finish. -
2. CleaningClean the brushes and equipment immediately with lukewarm water. Add household detergent when necessary. Do not use hot water.
-
3. StoringStore in accordance with local regulations. Keep away from- oxidising agents, strong alkalis, strong acids. Additional information on storage conditions Observe label precautions. Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep away from sources of ignition. No smoking. Prevent unauthorised access.
